ARE FARM TOURS SAFE? DO ANIMALS CARRY GERMS?
Farm tours give people of all ages an exciting opportunity to learn more about animals and agriculture but can also put people at risk of becoming ill or injured.
Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases that can be spread between animals and people. Some examples include Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Yersinia enterocolitica, Leptospira, and Cryptosporidium. Some germs are naturally in the intestines of healthy animals and are unknowingly passed in the animals' feces. People get sick from these germs by swallowing them. Germs may end up on your hands after contact with animals. Older adults, young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk.
To reduce your risk of getting sick: properly supervise children in animal areas, don't put fingers or other things in your mouth in animal areas, and thoroughly was your hands with soap and water immediately after visiting animals. Hand sanitizer may be used as a supplement to soap and water, but does not replace soap and water because it doesn't kill parasites like Cryptosporidium.
